In October, as part of their history topic on WW2, Year 6 spent an afternoon cooking their very own feast with rations. Vegetable garden soup provided a wholesome and warming starter for the children as they discussed how important growing produce was during the 1940s in Britain. To accompany their soup, they could make a sandwich with rations of Spam, cheese, egg or jam. The Spam proved a popular choice! Dessert was treacle sponge, eggless cake and sweet eggy bread. By going away and researching how much sugar a child was rationed per week, calculating how many grams of sweets this equates to and then bringing their information into school, the children were able to win their own sweets (2018 portions rather than 1940!) Thank you to family members that came in to support the children with their cooking- a fabulous feast was enjoyed by all!
